Hearing the Music
of Early New South Wales
Lightly Tread, 'tis Hallowed Ground
‘John Scotland’, aka George Berg (c. 1720-1775)
George Berg was a London-based organist, harpsichordist and amateur chemist from London, who was also a prolific composer between the years 1755-1770. His glee, 'Lightly Tread, 'tis Hallowed Ground' was performed by Harriet Jones and two unidentified vocalists at the fourth Sydney concert in 1826.
Lyrics
Lightly tread, ‘tis hallowed ground,
hark above, below, around,
fairy bands their vigils keep,
whilst frail mortals sink to sleep,
and the moon with feeble rays,
gilds the brook that bubbling plays,
as in murmurs soft it flows,
music meet for lover’s woes.
Score from Bingley's select vocalist: containing songs, glees, duets, &c. by eminent composers (London: J Bingley, 1842)
